However, it’s important to note that these timelines can vary. To get the most accurate and up-to-date information, visit the U.S. State Department website or contact the passport agency directly. You would rather have your passport and not use it, than not have it and need it. So even if you’re not planning on going out of the country any time soon, it’s better to have it just in case!

How can I get my passport faster?

If you need your passport sooner, there are expedited options available:

• Expedited processing: By paying an additional fee, you can expedite the processing time to approximately 7-9 weeks (this used to be 4-6 weeks) (including mailing).

• Expedited appointment: If you have urgent travel plans within 9 weeks, you can make an appointment at a regional passport agency for expedited in-person processing. If you have not applied, your appointment at a passport agency or center must be scheduled within 14 calendar days of your international travel date. If you have already applied, your appointment must be scheduled within 5 calendar days of your international travel date.

  If I don’t get my passport in time …where can I fly to?

  In the unfortunate event that your passport doesn’t arrive in time for your scheduled trip, there are still several options available:

• Travel to destinations accepting alternative documents: Some countries and territories accept alternative documents for U.S. citizens, such as a U.S. passport card, Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL), or NEXUS card. Research your destination’s entry requirements and explore these alternatives.

  • Canada and Mexico: U.S. citizens can enter these neighboring countries by land or sea using alternative documents, such as an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL), NEXUS card, or U.S. Passport Card.

• Visit U.S. territories: As a U.S. citizen, you can travel to U.S. territories, including Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands, without needing a passport.

  • U.S. Territories: U.S. citizens can travel to American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands without a passport.
